Born in Sussex, I moved a number of times as a child and finally ended up in rural Essex. I grew up interested in drawing, painting and making things. I can't remember learning to draw but I can remember my first 'sculpture' done at the age of 12, in a school art class. My then art master, Mr Jones, himself an able ceramic sculptor, made us do a life study of peppers sliced in half. Working with clay seemed far more natural to me than paint and from that point on I have made more sculpture than anything else.
My time at the Grammar was not happy and in the end I left to the more supportive and enjoyable environment of Hills Road 6th Form College, Cambridge, where I studied art in addition to science A-levels. At this time I had to choose between arts and sciences and went to Durham to study engineering which I then carried on to a doctorate at Cambridge. During this time my opportunity to make sculpture was severely limited.
After Cambridge I moved to Wiltshire and the small market town of Malmesbury, to work for Dyson. I was able to build a small studio and to relearn how to sculpt. I left Dyson to carry on my career with a major oil services company, designing drilling tools, but have been able to stay in Malmesbury and to continue to develop as an artist.
